Unai Emery Etxegoien (49) is not a coach to be under-rated, the current head coach of La Liga club Villarreal is a low-key achiever.
Having played mostly in the Spanish Segunda division during his career, he retired in 2004 and took up his first coaching job with Lorca Derpotivo same year, UD Almeria in 2006, Valencia in 2008, FC Spartak Moscow in 2012, Sevilla in 2013, PSG in 2016, Arsenal in 2018 and Villarreal in 2020.
In all his coaching expeditions in these 8 different clubs, the Spanish manager from Hondaribbia has won 12 titles of which 4 of these titles are European titles.
However, he is considered ‘the king of the Europa League title’ having lifted the trophy 4 times after defeating the mighty and ruthless Manchester United Europa squad of the season with the toothless Villarreal on May 26th, 2021 in Gdansk, Poland.
Defeating Manchester united made it his fourth, while prior to this victory had a record of winning the title three consecutive times with Sevilla in 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 consecutively.
He remains the first and only coach to win the Europa cup four times ahead of Giovanni Trapattoni who won the title for the third time in 1992-93 with Juventus FC.
In all his five appearances at the Europa League finals, only Chelsea under the management of the Italian boss Maurizio Sarri has defeated Unai Emery in 2019 at Baku – a city located 28 metres below sea level, the lowest lying national capital in the world and the largest city and capital of Azerbaijan.
Adding to his trophy shelf are:
COUPE DE LA LIGUE
COUPE DE FRANCE
LIGUE 1 CHAMPION
|CHAMPIONS CUP CHAMPION||PSG||2016-17|
In the midst of many big names in the coaching game of football, one can say Unai Emery is a low-key achiever.
