Top 10 Clubs with the Most Premier League Titles

Top 10 Clubs with the Most Premier League Titles

Manchester United is top on the list of English clubs with the most Premier League titles having won the title for a record of thirteen times, more than twice the number of the closest rivals Chelsea and Manchester City which have won the title Five times each.

Sometimes the Premier League title is mistaken for the First Division title, which is quite understandable. The First Division existed prior to the establishment of the Premier League in 1992. Therefore, the Premier League remains the first-tier domestic club football tournament in England.

However, for better understanding, we shall be reviewing separately the Clubs with the most Premier League titles as well as the First Division titleholders before we combine the record in different parts of this article.

The List of English Clubs with the Most Premier League Titles

Since its inception in 1992, only 7 English clubs have claimed the Premier League title with Manchester United boasting of more victory with a wide margin.

  • Manchester United – 13
  • Chelsea – 5
  • Machester City – 5
  • Arsenal – 3
  • Liverpool – 1
  • Blackburn Rovers – 1
  • Leicester City – 1

Manchester United

Popularly referred to as the Red Devil, the club was the first to ever win the Premier League title in its new form in the 1992-93 season. However, they don’t really have such a great record when compared with how many First Division titles they had won which is just 7 in all. Making it a total number of 20 top-flight English titles won by the Club – which is yet a great record.

Also, Manchester United remains the only club to have won the Premier League 3 consecutive times in a row under the management of Alex Ferguson, the club achieved this feat twice at intervals in 1998/99 – 2000/01 and 2006/07 – 2008/09.

Chelsea

Chelsea ranks second on the list of clubs with the most Premier League titles with 5 EPL titles to their name. However, when combined with the First Division title, they have a total of 6 titles which implies that they only won the First Division title just once. But they had won the Second Division title twice for the record.

The Blues as they are popularly called won their first-ever Premier League title in the 2004-05 season and defended the trophy in 2005-06 and subsequently claimed the title again in 2009-10, 2014-15 and 2016-17 seasons.

Manchester City

Manchester City tallied Chelsea’s EPL record of 5 titles when they won the 2020-21 EPL title under Pep Guardiola’s management. However, the club has two First Division.

Like their derby rival Manchester United, City has won the Premier 2 times consecutively in 2017-18 and 2018-19.

Arsenal

Arsenal is yet to win a title in recent times but they have three English Premier League titles to their name. In addition to the three EPL titles, The Gunners had won 10 First Division titles which adds up to a total of 13 top division titles for the North London club.

They are the third to have won more first-tier titles in the English League behind Manchester United and Liverpool.

Arsenal remains one of the clubs that has competed in the Premier League since its formation in 1992. They are the only top English club that has never played in the second division.

Liverpool

Liverpool has only one Premier League title to its name. The club, however, has 18 First Division titles. They are the first club behind Manchester United to have claimed a total of 19 top-flight English titles, hence they are considered one of the most successful clubs in the Premier League.

Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn Rovers also has one Premier League title to its name just like Liverpool. But while Liverpool has more First Division titles than any other club on this list, Blackburn had only won the latter title a record of two times and that is why they rank lower.

Leicester City

Leicester City won their first and only EPL title two seasons after their promotion to the top tier league from the Second Division where they had claimed 7 league titles. They have remained in the top tier league since then and have proven that they are one of the fastest-growing English teams in recent years. They have competed in the UEFA Champions League as well. The Club has no record of First Division title.
